A frock coat is the essential clothing for any respectable men of the 18th century. You could only be seen without one while working as a tradesman or a peasant. Even indoors, you would wear this piece of clothing all the time.
On the plus side, a frock coat just looks great. Even if you don't go for the silk one, you will look dashing wearing one. And it not only works for historical events or as an Outlander cosplay. You can wear a frock coat as part of your evening wear or even as a stylish piece of your everyday wardrobe.
A frock coat looks great on a woman, too ;)
CUT
This frock coat it suitable for the time from 1750 to 1770. Key features are:
- straight front
- narrow sleeves with small cuffs
- no collar
- overall a rather narrow cut
The frock coat is not meant to be closed in front. There are not real pockets. (If you want it altered for practical everyday wear, just ask me before buying)
This listing is ONLY for the frock coat.
FABRIC
For a historical accurate frock coat, you can't go wrong with Wool or Silk Tafetta. Linen was used as lining. There may have been frock coats made of cotton but I don't know of any preserved ones. There are some preserved ones made of velvet. But 18th-century velvet looked different than today's velvet.
- Cotton (100%): a light and easily washable fabric. This is great for everyday wear, a cosplay costume or for a costume in general. Great in warm weather. Cotton is available in many colors.
- Linen (100%): Linen is a very breathable fabric and really comfortable in summer. Linen is very durable, too. Many colors are available. It can be machine washed.
- Wool (100%): this is light wool with a smooth surface, not the rough worsted wool used for cloaks. Wool is perfect for historical garments. And it is very durable, too. Paired with a linen lining, it even works in summer. Color choices are limited, though, and it has to be dry cleaned.
- Velvet (100% cotton): Cotton velvet is a great choice if you want a really stunning frock coat. If you think about a waistcoat for your wedding or as evening wear, you should consider velvet. It is available in many colors and can even be machine washed.
- Dupioni silk (100% silk): Dupioni has an uneven weave most people like a lot. It is the number one silk fabric today. But it is not historically accurate. If you want a stunning look for your wedding, evening wear or even luxury for every day, choose dupioni silk. You can choose from many colors. Dry cleaning only, though.
Silk taffeta (100% silk): Silk taffeta is the historically accurate choice for noblemen wear of the colonial times. Colors are a bit more limited than with dupioni silk. Only dry cleaning.
For LINING, you can choose from:
- taffeta (100% polyester): a very thin taffeta. This is used in most garments you can buy off rack. It is comfortable and inexpensive but not very durable. Many colors are available. Machine wash possible.
- Satin (100% polyester): thicker than taffeta and more durable. It has this typical satin shine to it. Satin is available in a lot of colors. You can use it to add a color pop to the inside of your frock coat. Can be machine washed.
- Linen (100%): This is what most historical garments are lined with. Linen is a great choice for a lining as it is very breathable. And you can just air it out.
- silk (100%): a thin silk, called habotai or ponge. This is great as a light lining for a really luxury garment. Silk was seldom used for historical garments as you could easily cut costs here and linen is more durable.

This listing is only for solid colors. If you want a certain color, please ask before buying the frock coat.
