Luxury and a really noble attire are what this garment stands for. A Houppelande is the most elegant garment for men in the late middle ages. It looks just gorgeous. And it is just the thing if you want to make a lasting impression. It is perfect for your wedding in a medieval style. Or for your sca tournament or your medieval market persona.
The Houppelande is a garment that was fashionable in the 15th century at the court of Burgundy. It was very popular with men and women alike. This version is for men. The women's garment usually had a deeper neckline to show the undergarment.
There were quite a lot of variations: with or without a collar, with narrow sleeves are really big ones, with fur trim, with a sumptuous lining and - for men - with many buttons. All in all, you can't go wrong if you make it as lavish as possible. This garment was meant for showing off. You are supposed to have yards of luxurious fabric and a lot of decoration. But it will look splendid in a more simple style, too.
The general cut of the Houppelande is a wide coat in A-Line. A-Line means that the coat has its smallest part at the bust and will get wider towards the bottom. The front is closed with buttons - the more the better. It is meant to be worn with a belt. The belt is not included.
This listing is for a garment like the one you see on the pictures: without a collar, with medium width for the sleeves and a decent amount of buttons.
I will be happy to design your very own garment for you. Just drop me a line.
You can finish your look with a chaperon. Under the Houppelande, men wore a tunic. This tunic could either be about knee length or reach to the floor.
FABRIC
You can choose from a range of fabrics for your garment. Please pick your outer fabric from the first menu and the lining from the second.
outer fabric
cotton (100%): light and breathable. And you can choose from many colors. Easy to clean in the washing machine.
Linen (100%): perfect for hot summer days. Colors are a bit limited.
Wool mix (78% polyester, 22% wool): a cheaper alternative to pure wool. This fabric is a bit heavier than the light wool. And it is almost waterproof.
Light wool (100% wool): this is light wool with a sleek finish. It is just the thing for your historical garment.
Velvet (100% cotton): if you want to leave a lasting impression for your wedding, this is the right fabric. The drape and the soft feel are pure luxury.
Lining
Satin (100% polyester): a light fabric with a shiny finish. This is perfect for a LARP or medieval market. You can choose from many colors and it is easy to wash.
Cotton (100%): great as a lining for most fabrics.
Linen (100%): Linen and wool are a perfect combination for a historical garment.
silk (Ponge, 100% silk): a light silk. With silk as a lining, your Houppelande will look really elegant and it just feels so good.
